Schiphol Shopper
  [ Regulation & infrastructure ]

For optimal use in terminals some infrastructural adjustments are recommended:

  • Safety first - Consumer organisations and escalator manufacturers recommend to ban buggies and trolleys from escalators for safety reasons. Therefore at Schiphol escalator entrances are blocked by inconspicuous small posts.
  • Restricted areas - To keep trolleys within the defined area they can be outfitted with transponders. This offers the possibility to block certain parts of the terminal for the trolley.
  • Clear arrangement sections - To minimise efforts to constantly (re)arrange trolleys, clearly marked sections are recommended at places where passengers want to leave their trolley behind and at places where they will look for a trolley.

Nestings can be easily bent along the way. This makes extremely long nestings possible, which can be towed by an electric cart.

High density nesting saving terminal space.

"A very important result of the new situation is the fact that a high trolley-availability is realised, using only a minimum of expensive terminal floor space. [...]
At first I was sceptic about the visual disturbance 3,000 trolleys would cause in the terminal. [...] But now, having experienced the real practice, I am very pleased with the aesthetics of the trolley within the terminal. Especially long stacks of Shoppers look graceful and beautiful and are in no way a visual disturbance, on the contrary."
